A University of Hamburg was founded on the 1 April 1919 by Wilhelm Stern and others. A University grew away from a former "Allgemeinen Vorlesungswesen" & a "Kolonialinstitut" likewise when a "Akademischen Gymnasium". In todays world there are about 41,000 students (when of the run of 2004).
